History of the Gunpowder Plot

The Gunpowder Plot was a failed conspiracy in 1605 aimed at assassinating King James I of England and blowing up the House of Lords. The plot was orchestrated by a group of English Catholics, including Guy Fawkes, who sought to end Protestant rule in England and replace it with Catholic leadership.

On the night of November 4, 1605, Fawkes was discovered guarding a cache of explosives hidden beneath the House of Lords. Following his arrest, he and his co-conspirators were tortured and executed. The plot's failure was celebrated annually on November 5, leading to the tradition of Guy Fawkes Night, where bonfires are lit, and effigies of Fawkes are burned in remembrance of the event.
