GANGSEO DISTRICT,

SOUTH KOREA

Gangseo-gu (or the Gangseo District) is one of 25 autonomous districts within Seoul, South Korea, and is home to more than 600,000 residents. Like Raleigh, Gangseo is a rapidly growing community that places a strong emphasis on sustainability, public spaces, and quality of life. The district is known for its extensive network of parks, trails, and ecological preserves, including Seoul Botanic Park, Gangseo Marsh Ecological Park, and the Gangseodulraegil Trail. Gangseo has also become a major center for innovation through the development of Magok Smart City, a research and development hub that hosts leading companies in biotechnology, green energy, aviation, and advanced technology.

The partnership between Raleigh and Gangseo was established through Raleigh Sister Cities to promote cultural understanding, educational exchange, and the sharing of best practices in urban development. Both communities face similar opportunities and challenges related to growth, transportation, housing affordability, environmental stewardship, and economic innovation. The Raleigh–Gangseo partnership strengthens ties between North Carolina and South Korea while creating opportunities for collaboration that benefit both communities for years to come.

The Gangseo District became a Sister City with Raleigh in June 2026. For questions and inquiries about the partnership, please reach out to our Gangseo District Ambassador, Minu Lee.
